Amber Rose was born to Jon Testa, a Bajan man of Italian descent, and Shauna Soares, of Cape Verdan descent, on October 21, 1983. She is the couple's youngest child. Her parents divorced when she was three years old; she was raised by her maternal aunt, Mary Lakes. Rose originally wanted to own a restaurant because she enjoyed food, but instead turned to a modelling career.

Amber Rose has been featured in numerous magazines, including Smooth, Gotham, Vibe, Planting Seeds, In Tandem, Elle, and Complex, and has also been interviewed on Sirius Radio's "Shade 45's Lip Service". Rose was in a high profile on/off relationship with rapper Kanye West, starting 2008. They ultimately ended their relationship in summer 2010.
